7 Day Itinerary - From Macinaggio to Capraia and Elba

The rare beauty of this island can be best appreciated from the sea: dotting the coast the island presents charming coves, ancient watch towers and islets where seagulls nest. With only a three hour sail from Macinaggio, there is a small old harbour with a safe and clean anchorage to moor should all berths be taken.

The Island of Elba and its beautiful, 16th C. Florentine harbour of Portoferraio lies a few miles off the coast of Tuscany, within sight of Corsica and several neighboring islands.

Famed as the exile of Napoleon, Elba has been prized through the ages for its abundant mineral wealth and natural beauty.

Sailing in South Corsica

General information

French Corsica, including Elba and the Bonifacio straits, offers excellent cruising. The west coast includes some of the most dramatic scenery of the Mediterranean. Add hundreds of coves with brilliant white beaches, many islets, little intrusive development, plenty of anchorages, good marinas, attractive old town centres, and you'll need much more than four weeks for a thorough exploration. Or allow two weeks to circumnavigate visiting just the highlights.

Westerly winds through the Bonifacio straits, channelled between Corsica and Sardinia, often reach F7. This area is a popular cruising ground, sharing the extensive Maddalena and Lavezzi Archipelagos, together with a host of local anchorages on the main island coastlines.

South Corsica enjoys a Mediterranean climate which is hot and dry in summer, with air temperatures up to 36° C and water temperatures up to 25° C. In winter, weather is mild and rainy. Spring and the beginning of the autumn season are ideal times for a cruise around South Corsica as temperatures are pleasant, the landscape is beautiful and there are less people in the ports and anchorages. South Corsica has different weather systems between the east and west coasts. The west coast is more exposed and therefore windier. The prevailing wind is a westerly thermal breeze blowing at force of 3 to 5 on the Beaufort scale. It comes up in the morning and dies in the evening.

In the Strait of Bonifacio, conditions are specific with winds sometimes blowing in opposite directions and strongly, due to the bottleneck effect. In this area, you will find many places to take shelter.

If you decide to cruise around South Corsica in July or August, it’s probably best to favour anchorages to ports as they can often be packed and more expensive than in the low or mid season.

Climate on Corsica, various micro-climates create a wide variety of temperatures and precipitation. The main mountain range divides the island roughly in half. As a general rule the north is hotter than the south. Summers are long, stretching from May until October.

In the western Mediterranean the tide range is very small, rising/falling by just 30 cm to 60 cm (one to two feet).

Airports

There four airports on the island: Calvi, Bastia, Figari and Ajaccio, each providing excellent access to the main resorts. They are small and functional airports with a limited range of facilities.

On arrival, you will walk from the aircraft to the terminal building. There will be French passport control.

Bastia Poretta airport is 17km to the south of Bastia in the commune of Lucciana, Haute Corse. The airport is around 55kms from Macinaggio.

As public transport is very limited in Corsica, hiring a car is accepted as the best method of getting about, we can hire a taxi for you, we would recommend that you pre-book your hire car as availability is limited and the rates you will pay on arrival are higher than pre-booking.

On Arrival

Your yacht will be ready at 4:00pm for boarding. Boat briefings will be scheduled.

The yacht briefing introduces you to your yacht, its systems and safety.

On Departure

At the end of your charter your yacht will need to be vacated by 9:00am so we recommend that you return to the base the day before.

We require you to bag dirty laundry and leave in the cockpit, empty all cupboards and refrigerator of food and throw away, return snorkel gear and any lifejackets borrowed and ensure that the boat is handed back to us in a tidy state.

Mooring Fees

Mooring fees are usually charged in harbours and on town quays by the local municipality. Shore power, water, and shower and toilet facilities are included in the cost of berthing in a marina.

Currency

The official currency in France and Italy is the Euro (EUR). You can exchange money at the departure airport, but the exchange rate is often better once you are in France.

Language

French and Italian. Our professional skipper speaks four languages fluently (French, Italian, English, Spanish)

Electricity

The standard voltage on yacht is 220 Volts and uses the standard European 2 pin plug.

Safety

All yachts are equipped with adult life jackets harnesses we leave it up to you to decide when personal safety equipment should be worn. We have a limited supply of childrens life jackets (age 4+ only) if you have your own children's life jacket we would encourage you to bring it along. We suggest that children who are not strong swimmers should not be allowed in a dinghy without a life jacket or buoyancy aid and that they should wear a buoyancy aid or harness when on deck.
